I actually would start with the short story collection called [The Elephant Vanishes]. I teach [The Windup Bird Chronicles] (which I never could teach to high school students in the States!) and I think that would make a good introduction. Long and very complicated and convoluted and Murakami-weird. There's nothing like teaching a book to work at trying to get underneath its surface, but his work is wild and at times seemingly impenetrable. You have to put up with ambiguity to read him.

I like the Chinese sage. Any further details of the origin and identity of this? I need to look up those 1001 books to read before I die,,, And Margaret Atwood is incredible--each book is a surprise. Have you read any Murakami?

I thought I'd take this comment 'off-line' because it's not quite relevant to the 1001 thread, but in the English teacher circles I frequent, we refer to Mockingbird as 'good ol' Tequila' :)
