cmbohn in 999 Challenge : Dana's 999 Challenge (Jun 26, 2009, 12:39am)

I love Mort. It is one of my favorite Pratchett books. And the next one in the DEATH series is Reaper Man, which is possibly even better. I keep hearing about Three Men in a Boat. I have to find a copy of that! And I loved Barchester Towers. I was afraid it would be kind of stilted, ...

... comic mysteries I love. One of my favorite and funniest is Murder with Peacocks. And I love Terry Pratchett. Mort and Reaper Man are my all time faves, but then I love Wee Free Men too. And another vote for Wodehouse.

Caspettee, I adore Terry Pratchett! I've only read a few of his books (The Colour of Magic, Mort, Reaper Man), but I'm working on Soul Music right now. It's becoming a bit of an addiction, I think. :)

I love Pyramids but don't think I've ever said so on LT. So here you go. Lorie, definitely Mort before Reaper Man!

Reaper Man

I love Reaper Man. DEATH is my favourite character. Hogfather is a particularly good one too.

... the discworld series I like the ones surrounding the character DEATH (like Mort and Thief of time) but the one called Reaper Man is my favorite... I just can't help laughing when I read that one.

... we may have had this conversation before... ;) #87 actually, I'll agree with TadAD - probably best to read Mort before Reaper Man - while they will all stand alone, you'll probably enjoy the latter more, having read the former...

>87: I'm not sure I'd start with Reaper Man. I think Pratchett's Discworld stuff works best when you start at the beginning of one of the mini-series. But, others may disagree. :-)

Agreed, Reaper Man is definitely one of my all time favourite Pratchetts in the Discworld series. Probably joint top with Pyramids.

Reaper Man is just................the best of the best. As is Mort. I think Death is one of the most inspired creations I have ever come across.

I haven't yet read anything by Terry Pratchett, but your review has convinced me to try Reaper Man. Thanks!

I've spent the last few weeks in stitches over Reaper Man. It's hilarious, thought-provoking, and full of the undead, bumbling (but well-meaning) wizards, crazed carts, and Death. The scenes with Death and his new day job were fantastic, and I loved the final sequence. Completely surpassed any ...

19. Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett Wow! This book totally surpassed my expectations. It started out silly, quickly bumped into the funny zone, then zoomed around utter hilarity for the remaining 300 pages. I loved every bit of the book, which surprised me; usually, there's one character arc I ...

Very nice job! And some interesting books on here. I will have to look for some of them. Reaper Man is my favorite Discworld book. A lot of the YA books were new to me.

... quite humourous, just not what I was expecting. I'll probably look for more books by Martinez. For now, onto finishing Reaper Man! (and the slew of books I picked up at the library...)

Still working on Reaper Man and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I'm really enjoying Reaper Man--I've startled quite a few people with sudden outbursts of laughter! I hope to finish it soon, and since classes just got out for the summer, I should be able to!

Another enthusiastic vote for Reaper Man.

... expect from such a large series, the quality goes up and down all the time (my favourites would be Pyramids, Mort, Reaper Man and Carpe Jugulum). I would say that a lot of the best ones are earlier, but then he wrote Nation last year (non-Discworld), which is the best thing he's ...

#69 & 70: I'm working on Reaper Man now and loving it! My copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies arrived in the mail, though, so I'm flipping between the two books.

Death is brilliant. Can't wait to hear what you think of Reaper Man.

We've missed you! Did you ever get to Reaper Man?

Forgot to say I started The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James (2nd James). I finished Reaper Man by Pratchett earlier this week, it was beautiful and hilarious.

#62/63 Yep, I'd agree that Reaper Man is even better than Mort too! #64 I also love Edward Gorey - I saw an adaptation of The Doubtful Guest a little while again - it was wonderful, but I'm guessing that if you'd never seen the books it could be a bit confusing!

#62 ronincats: Oh, good, I own Reaper Man. That means I don't need to make a trip to the library. And it's better than Mort, you say? Fantastic!

That would be Reaper Man, even better than Mort.

Reaper Man is excellent, Pratchett at his mature best. Glad you are enjoying it. Jealous that you have all these great books still to discover. But, we'll always have re-reads.

I think it sounds more like Ridcully. Reaper Man

January 31, 2009 #7: Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett pretty good, but not my favorite. I don't think the two parts of the plot (Windle Poons and the shopping mall and death's 'life') worked together very well.

#16 Mort is one of my absolute favourite Terry Pratchett's, along with Reaper Man. Death is a brilliant character :)

You can - I started with Night Watch - but I'm crazy about reading order, so after that and Reaper Man I started at the beginning. ... I found it so-so. Too predictable. I just didn't really care that much about who did it. But maybe that's because I got Reaper Man from the library today and I can't wait to start it!

Reaper Man, or one of the Rincewind novels. But I'm sure they'd be miscast, and I'd be angry. #18 YES! Christopher Eccleston should be in EVERYTHING. And David Tennant should play Rincewind.

Reaper Man and The Colour Of Magic, bought while I was working at Barnes & Noble. I was laughing so loudly in the back room that the manager lectured on me 'maturity.' I also bought Night Watch in Paris, France, at the original Shakespeare & Co. bookstore. I just like telling people that.

... an interesting variety of books. Also, you might want to read the Death novels by Pratchett. They start with Mort then Reaper Man. His young adult series is also really good. It starts with Wee Free Men.

... just by the way, I finished Witch's Boy a while ago- also great. On the Pratchett-front, I agree with ArmyAngel that Reaper Man is the best (ie my favorite) Death book. However, I personally think that the City Watch books are easily the best in the series, with NightWatch (touchstones ...

Because of the spoilerific nature of Soul Music I didn't touch it until I had Mort on my shelf... but Reaper Man will always be remembered by ...

... those would be the first few books in the series: Colour of Magic, the Light Fantastic, and a few others. Oh, and Reaper Man is my favorite DEATH book.

... said it seems like it was really only the paper slip at the front that got damaged. So the book lives on! Did you like reaper man by the way? I'm a total PTerry addict.

Yesterday, I returned an ILL copy of Reaper Man to my public library. The paperback costs $7. I'm not even sure when it happened / what exactly it was, but I discovered there was a red / pink liquid (dried) all over the paper slip they attach to the front of the book. Some of it had gotten ...

I'm just about done with Reaper Man and The Shoemaker and the Tea Party. I also just started The Independent Scholar's Handbook.

Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett - my first every discworld novel

Reaper Man arrived at the library yesterday, and so I started it last night; I had to get it and read it after absolutely loving Mort. I'm also about halfway through The Shoemaker and the Tea Party - part biography of a poor shoemaker (obviously), part essay on when and why people started ...

... ending; burn 'em out like rats. :) I'm now left wondering what to start reading in the fiction department. I expected Reaper Man to have arrived at the library by the time I finished 'Salem's Lot, but it hasn't, so I'm debating on whether I want to wait until it arrives, or grab another ...

I'm re-reading Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett (and liking it even more on this read), and reading The ABCs of Political Economy.

"Any humorous one out there?" Mort Reaper Man et al by Terry Pratchett What happens when Death doesn't, is the basic premise. Very funny.

Dude, you HAVE to start with the Discworld books! I recommend witches abroad, reaper man, or wee free men, as they require little knowledge about the world, and don't really mention a lot of "before" knowledge. These also all have characters where, if you like them, you can read more ...

This is so hard!! My Fave, above all others, is Reaper Man. I actually journeyed across three states to get my battered, torn cover, over-loved copy signed by The Master Himself. I love that book and I reread it over and over whenever I'm in a foul mood. My Least Fave: The one that ...
