The story of two little girls, Libby Mitchell and "Fawn" Tawcumegoqua, who are firm friends and whose friendship is firmly supported by their two families. On the night that Libby sneaks away from home to attend a native ceremony, government soldiers ride into camp to round up the Potawatomis and force them from their land. Libby is mistaken for one of the tribe and deported as well. The fear and horror of her plight, and theirs, is well conveyed but in keeping with the age of the intended readers, the ending is optimistic, but not unrealistically so. An outstanding book. ( )
