I defy someone to tell me poetry is boring. ( )

At some point in my public school career, I must have read a poem or two by e. e. cummings. Wanting to read more poetry in general, I picked this book up because I remember liking the author, even if I could not remember a single poem of his. I was not disappointed. This volume is organized by the poems’ themes, and each chapter has a nice bit of explanation from the editor at the beginning, which was nice for a poetry amateur like me. While I found the Cubist poems incomprehensible, I enjoyed the playful and natural poems, as well as the love poems. The political poems, on the other hand, I did not enjoy, but then I generally do not like political poems. All in all, I enjoyed this book and would like to read more poetry by this author. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0871401541, Paperback)

"No one else has ever made avant-garde, experimental poems so attractive to both the general and the special reader."—Randall Jarrell

The one hundred and fifty-six poems here, arranged in twelve sections and introduced by E. E. Cummings's biographer, include his most popular poems, spanning his earliest creations, his vivacious linguistic acrobatics, up to his last valedictory sonnets. Also featured are thirteen drawings, oils, and watercolors by Cummings, most of them never before published.

The selection includes most of the favorites plus many fresh and surprising examples of Cummings's several poetic styles. The corrected texts established by George J. Firmage have been used throughout.
