Welcome to the world of the rich, glamorous and New Yorker vampires. Now I see why some people see this as a fashion spread disguised as a vampire YA novel. There's vast name drop on everything designer and everything that has to do with being glamorous. For me, there is nothing wrong with that. It just shows how Schuyler, Mimi, Jack, Bliss and the rest of the blood sucking colony can live a life as a human. It was actually greatly entertaining. Like watching "Devil wears Prada". Lol. The vampires in this book sounds like they are really immortal (in a sense). They are not the conventional stake evading kind, nor allergic of garlic, not even the "they-will-be-reduce-to-ashes-when-expose-to-sunlight", and they definitely don't sparkle. They are like humans only better. They also die as a human, where they seem to rest for a long time and then they reincarnate into another version of themselves. The only thing that puts them out of commission is this Silver Bloods. I've heard of this concept before (minus the Silver Blood part). The moment I heard about the stages of vampirism, The Order of Aset Ka immediately comes to mind. Here’s a little something from that book for your curiosity: "The vampires of the House of Aset, the Order of Aset Ka, are not vampires from fiction or myth, nor are they new-age psychic vampires alike. They belong to a very specific metaphysical breed, or otherkin bloodline, born thousands of years ago. Long dead and reborn, in an ever-changing world, their souls linger forever and, in silence, they walk among us."- Asetian Bible, Public Version, 2007 But that's for another review. Sorry for the segue, going back to Blue Blood. So yeah. I like it. I am definitely adding this to my collection of vampire series. The only complaint I have really is Schuyler's personality. I cannot decide whether she's interesting enough, insecure, or borderline lame. I need to know her better. Looking forward to book 2... in a few minutes. ( )

Pretty good teen-vampire story. It did get a little old how all these perfect 15-year-olds were running around drinking and doing drugs and the like. I think the story would have benefited from a little more time spent on the Vampire legends and backstory. ( )

Most people think of blue bloods as the old elite families...but they are more than that. They are an anceint race of Vampires that have been living for generations peacefully among the Red Bloods, or humans. But recently something has begun to kill the young off before they come into their powers. They face the choice of ignoring this threat and hoping it will go away or confronting it once and for all.

Schuyler Van Allen is vampire, a Blue Blood. These vampires are not your traditional vampires. They are nearly invincible...sunlight, stakes, silver...all seem to be myths. So when Schulyer and her friends find that something is out there that is able to kill them off, they set off on a hunt to find what it is. This hunt for answers leads to more questions than they started with.

The teenagers, Schulyer and her Blue Blood schoolmates, are fascinating characters that cover the entire specrum of personalites. There are some you love, some you hate, and some you won't be able to make your mind up about. They are dynamic and adjust their life perspectives as situations change. The story was portrayed wonderfully, revealing enough to keep you reading without giving away the critical information to figure out who the killer is. I'm starting book two later today.

There were some typos and a few times the story jumped in a awkward way as if the author wasn't sure how to segway into the next section. I'm hoping her skills become a bit more polished as she continues with the series.

Schuyler Van Alan  is a girl living in NYC from a high status that is running low on money compared to the rest of the old families in New York. She lives with her grandmother because her father died before she was born and her mother is in a coma. She goes to a private, prestigious high school, Duchesene, where she is a not very popular. She dresses differently than other girls and doesn't have the same attitude as them. She soon discovers that she is a vampire along with most of the other kids at Duchesene and all the other rich families. But now a vampire predator is after them and she has to convince the high council to believe her.
Not as great as I expected, but a good read. Interesting turn on vampires, but otherwise your average run-of -the-mill teenage vampire novel- romance, blood, suspense, mixed with your average rich girl novel- romance blood, suspense. Definitely fun to read but nothing especially noteworthy. ( )

This had a strong start and some interesting elements (vamps who are trying to win their souls back so they can re-enter the kingdom of heaven, for example). And I admit that it's sort of witty to imagine all the old-money New York families as being secret vampires. But beyond that, this book wound up just being a dull collection of brand names and shallow characterizations. There's nothing sexy or thrilling here; ultimately it's all pretty dull. ( )

Epigraph
The family was not simply the sum of the connections created by a large, extended set of relations...a family...was a name, a material and symbolic patrimony, and a form of stakeholding in America..."describing a total lineage, past, present and future."
--Eric Homberger, "Mrs. Astor's New York"
You can't push it underground, You can't stop it screaming out, How did it come to this? You will suck the life out of me....
--Muse, "Time is Running Out"
Dedication
This book is dedicated to my dad, Bert de la Cruz, true blue in every sense of the word, who has heroes' blood in his veins. This book would not exist without the love, support, insight, and intelligence of my husband, Mike Johnston, to whom I owe everything.
First words
The Bank was a decrepit stone building at the tail end of Houston Street, on the last divide between the gritty East Village and the wilds of the Lower East Side.
